2015 Myriad Cellars Halcon Vineyard Syrah, Yorkville Highlands
At 2,500 feet above the valley floor in the Yorkville Highlands, this is the highest elevation vineyard in the Myriad portfolio. The vines are planted directly into broken shale, which is so thick that very little topsoil is evident in the vine rows. Reverberating through every layer of this Syrah are the rocky, schist soils of this vineyard. Dynamic and woodsy from the 50% whole cluster fermentation, this expressive Syrah is deeply concentrated, with brambly dark fruits and an alluring Alpine quality. An expressive nose of violets, eucalyptus, and crushed stone frame flavors of savory salted plum and fresh blackberries. True to Mike Smith style, power and unadulterated fruit abound but added structure due to the high elevation and stem inclusion add brawny and smooth tannins. This wine promises to reward to those with the patience to cellar it for several years, but if you open early, add a nice decant.
