2014 Myriad Cellars Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard Syrah, Napa Valley
What a great performance the Sugarloaf Mountain vineyard put in for what will be the last of its kind. Unfortunately these old, low yielding Syrah vines were ripped up and replanted to Bordeaux varietals. Sadly, this has become an all too common practice in California’s more popular wine growing regions. This year’s Sugarloaf is all about pure & hedonistic pleasure that came from 1.8 tons per acre, our lowest tonnage to date. Dark to the core, soaring scents of dark plums, creosote, bitter chocolate and cigar box combine with slight stems on the mid palate. Firm but polished tannins are awash with pure Syrah dark fruits, charred notes and white pepper that last seemingly forever. The finish is flamboyant, yet shows a powerful & graceful length. We recommend a long decant and food pairing if you open a bottle in the near term or age this beauty for 5-7 years in the cellar.
