2014 Myriad Cellars Halcon Vineyard Syrah Yorkville Highlands, Mendocino County

The Halcon vineyard is located at an elevation of 2500 feet in the Yorkville Highlands section of the Mendocino appellation overlooking Anderson Valley and benefits from its location above the fog line. Combine that with low vigor soils and excellent drainage, it’s a perfect place to grow cool climate Syrah. Dense ruby in color and clear to rim combines with aromas of black cherries, pepper spice, violets and spring flowers. The palate is definitely savory but there’s also a mineralty aspect with a touch of citrus zest on the tail end. The tannins are moderate and successfully frame the finish which is full of natural acidity, Japanese plums, iron and a potpourri of meaty undertones. Two nicely used barrels carried this wine to bottling, so look for nothing but pure Syrah pleasure. A short decant will open this wine right up or age for 4-6 years to bring out even more subtle complexities.
